National Portfolio Day Association (NPDA)

The National Portfolio Day Association (NPDA) was created in 1978, solely for the organization and planning of National Portfolio Days. The Association consists of representatives from regionally accredited US colleges and universities that are accredited institutional members of the National Association of Schools of Art and Design (NASAD) and Canadian colleges and universities that are members of Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada (AUCC) or that hold NASAD Substantial Equivalency status.  NPDA is the only organization of its kind and the membership represent the highest standard of visual arts education available in the United States and Canada.

NPDA Phase 1

Concept 01
Connection

As we interact with a plethora different prospective students and professors, we begin to develop several connections, which in this case consist of a physical, mental, and verbal bond of overlapping cultures.

Concept 02
Communication

A neuron is an electrically excitable cell that processes and transmits information through the nervous system of the body. Neurons communicate with each other in ways that no other cell inside the body can, the way artists can communicate to each other like no other person can.

Concept 03
Projection

Prospective students view themselves in the profession that they intent to pursue, and they can also invision themselves developing new and creative ideas as well as improving previous developments.

Concept 04
Collection

Collecting is the act of systematically seeking and acquiring particular groups of items, which eventually create a defined group or mass. As artists, over the years we begin to collect supplies that not only help aid in creation, but also begin to define us as an artist. When beginning the transition from high school to art institute artists begin to see their small collection of supplies grow, the same way a collection of stamps expands over time. This concept explores the linking of a common generic collection, stamps, with the inevitable growth of art supplies.

Concept 05
Cultivate

When preparing land for raising crops, a farmer affectionately labors over the soil to improve their outcome, the way artist never stop toiling over their craft. It is the process of cultivating one work from the ground up that is the true experience of an art institute.

Phase 2

Concept 01
Communication

A neuron is an electrically excitable cell that processes and transmits information through the nervous system of the body. Neurons communicate with each other in ways that no other cell inside the body can, the way artists can communicate to each other like no other person can.

NPDA Final

Communication is the essential part of an artistic experience.  Effective communication leads to conceptual development. National Portfolio Day gives students their first professional understanding of communication within their work.

Using an abstracted image of a neuron we intend to show the processes of transmitting information throughout the body. Neurons communicate with each other in ways that no other cell can, the way artists communicate to each other like no other person can.

Final Result:

Creating a portfolio piece that is both visually engaging and interactive was the goal of this project. The housing of the CD within the vessel was the main focus, and the representation of the designers portfolio should be represented throughout the format. The use of pattern and samples of my own portfolio were used to add interest through viewer discovery and modular activation. This piece was designed to present the designer to the client of prospective employer in a manner that will demonstrate proficiency and knowledge of skills within the realm of design.
